History of AI

The history of Artificial Intelligence (AI) dates back to ancient times when myths and stories spoke of intelligent machines and mechanical beings. However, the formal foundation of AI began in the 20th century. In 1950, British mathematician Alan Turing proposed the concept of machine intelligence with the famous Turing Test, questioning whether machines can think. By 1956, the term “Artificial Intelligence” was coined at the Dartmouth Conference, marking the birth of AI as an academic field. Early AI research focused on problem-solving and symbolic reasoning. The 1960s and 1970s saw the development of early AI programs like ELIZA and SHRDLU, which simulated conversation and understood simple environments. However, due to limited computing power and overpromising results, AI faced setbacks—known as the “AI winters.” In the 1990s and 2000s, AI revived with improved algorithms, data availability, and computing power. Landmark events included IBM’s Deep Blue defeating chess champion Garry Kasparov and later, Google’s AlphaGo beating the world’s best Go player. Today, AI powers everything from virtual assistants to self-driving cars and generative models like ChatGPT. From theoretical concepts to real-world transformation, the history of AI is a journey of persistent innovation, ambition, and exponential growth.
