In today’s fast-paced world, learning on the go has become a necessity. Many people use their commute or free time to further their education or acquire new skills. But what do the terms “hands-free learning”, “on-the-go learning” and “mobile learning” really mean, and how do they differ from each other?

Mobile learning is a broad term that encompasses learning via mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, or laptops. It allows access to learning content from almost anywhere and at any time. Mobile learning is often associated with consuming videos, reviewing flashcards, or reading e-books on mobile devices. It offers flexibility and accessibility but often requires the active use of hands and eyes to consume the content.

“On-the-go” is often used in the context of mobile learning. An example of this is the YouTube channel “MrWissen2Go”, which offers excellent content. However, watching videos while walking can be risky. It is important to define exactly what is meant by “on-the-go”.

Hands-free learning, on the other hand, stands out because it allows learning without using your hands. This is especially important when you are moving, whether it is driving, cycling, going to the gym, or walking. The freedom of not having to use your hands is crucial to seamlessly integrating learning into your daily routine. Podcasts, audiobooks, and voice messages are great examples of hands-free learning content that allow learners to absorb and process information while moving from one place to another. In another article, however, we will discuss why you CANNOT learn with podcasts and audiobooks and why you need BSL books for that 😉 An interesting aspect that is often overlooked is the role of commuting time in students’ lives. Studies show that around 50% of this time is spent walking. This time could be used effectively to acquire knowledge, provided the learning methods are hands-free. This is not only efficient but also an innovative way to productively use what is often considered wasted time. Hands-free learning integrates learning content seamlessly into everyday life without restricting freedom of movement, thus offering maximum flexibility.
